在外公館長表彰とは、日本と諸外国・地域との相互理解及び友好親善の促進に寄与された個人・団体に対して各国・地域に駐在する日本大使・総領事が授与する顕彰です。

10月23日，総領事公邸において，五明明子前日系文化センター・博物館理事長に対して在外公館長表彰が授与されました。五明明子氏は、日加間の相互理解・友好の促進及び日系コミュニティ発展に大きく貢献されてきました。

11月6日，総領事公邸において，桑原誠也元桜楓会会長に対して在外公館長表彰が授与されました。桑原誠也氏は桜楓会を１９９８年から２００８年までの１１年間という長きに亘り、会長として先頭に立って引っ張ってこられ、会長として桜楓会会員のために様々なイベントを企画・提供するだけではなく、悩める人からの様々な相談事に真摯に耳を傾け、相談役としても対応されてきました。

Consul General’s Commendation in honour of Ms. Akiko Gomyo,former president of the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre.

Good evening. I am pleased to welcome you to tonight’s special ceremony. It is my honour to award this year’s Consul General’s Commendation to Ms. Akiko Gomyo who has contributed greatly to Japan Canada relations and the Nikkei community in British Columbia through her service at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (NNMCC /Nikkei Centre).

When Ms. Gomyo immigrated to Canada, she brought a wealth of international experience. Born in Japan, educated there and abroad, she earned a BA from Sophia University, lived in Europe and Central America, and spoke fourlanguages. In Canada she earned an MBA from UBC and managed a successful business for some 22 years. All those experiences and a record of success underpinned her accomplishments at Nikkei Center.

Her association with Nikkei Centre, began before the building was constructed when she was involved in fundraising.
She later joined the Board of Directors of Nikkei Centre in 2009, but her contributions did not end there.

One of her great contributions was to get Nikkei Matsuri on track. Since inception in 2013, the annual Nikkei Matsuri festival has been a marquee event at Nikkei Centre bringing Nikkei community members together as well as introducing their culture to the wider audience of Canadian society. Following a successful inaugural event, Ms. Gomyo served for two years as the executive committee chairperson helping the festival to become firmly established as a popular annual event in the Japanese Canadian community and beyond.

In 2016, Ms. Gomyo was recruited to the position of President. Recognizing that the Nikkei community had benefited greatly from the efforts of earlier generations, as a member of the post-war generation Ms. Gomyo wanted to serve to further enhance the role Nikkei Center played.
Seeing its unfulfilled potential and believing that Nikkei Centre should be true to Japanese traditions and arts while keeping Japanese Canadian history alive, she strove to preserve the inherent Japanese aspects while including other cultures and attracting the wider community. Her vision included the conviction that Nikkei Centre should be for all people – both Japanese and English speakers alike.
With optimism, determination, and a goal-oriented plan, she set about to revitalize Nikkei Centre. Initiatives included enlarging the membership, the volunteer corps, and the number of sponsors as well as enhancing awareness among the public thereby raising the profile. The scope of activities at Nikkei Centre were expanded and rentals increased. During her tenure, significant growth took place step-by-step and Nikkei Centre became established as a hub of communication, gathering and community activities.
This year Nikkei Centre celebrates its 20th anniversary. Nobody expected that we would be caught-up in a pandemic now. We have to steer through rough water hand in hand and seek new ways of organizing activities and contributing to the community, just as Ms. Gomyo has done.
Nikkei Centre’s growth and success can be attributed to many people’s efforts and dedicated work. However,tonight, let me single out Ms. Akiko Gomyo whose individual efforts, leadership and perseverance have undoubtedly led to the enhancement of the role and profile of Nikkei Centre and thereby enriched the lives of Nikkei people and the whole community.
I am pleased to now bestow on Ms. Akiko Gomyo, the Consul General’s Commendation.

桑原誠也・桜楓会元会長に対する公館長表彰の授与

このたびの受賞、誠におめでとうございます。
本来であれば、大勢の方をお呼びして授与式を執り行いたかったところではありますが、今般の新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響によりそれが叶わなくなったことは残念ではありましたが、逆にこのようなアットホームな会にすることができました。本日はご参加いただいた皆様全員、最後までゆっくりと楽しんでいただければと思います。

さて、 当館管轄地域には約３万５千人の在留邦人の方がいらっしゃいますが、そのうち２千人以上が７０歳以上の方々です。そういったご高齢の方々同士が親睦を深め、楽しく安全に過ごせるように支援する団体はいくつかありますが、そのうちの大きな役割を担っている団体の一つが桜楓会だと思います。その桜楓会を桑原さんは１９９８年から２００８年までの１１年間という長きに亘り、会長として先頭に立って引っ張っていらっしゃいました。その間、会長として桜楓会会員のために様々なイベントを企画・提供するだけではなく、悩める人からの様々な相談事に真摯に耳を傾け、相談役としても対応されてきました。特に新たに当地に移住してきた人たちにとって、親身になって相談にのってくれる桑原さんの存在が非常に有り難く、頼りになるものであったろうことは想像にかたくありません。

数えでは今年、満では来年卒寿を迎えられる今でも、精力的にコミュニティの各種行事に参加され、その背中で桜楓会の後輩の方々を鼓舞されていらっしゃいます。またスティーブストン仏教界に参加して英語で仏教を学ぶという、いつまでも知的好奇心を忘れず、学び続けるというその貪欲な姿勢に、我々も心から尊敬しております。

今回は公館長表彰ですが、百歳を迎えられると総理大臣から賞状と銀杯が贈呈されます。次はそちらをお渡しできるものと信じておりますし、その時までどうぞ、これまで同様に奥様と仲睦まじく、お元気で過ごされることを心から祈っております。
