今回は、先週東京で開催した私のTOEIC セミナーからいくつかの問題を紹介します。
1. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., but the manager has not shared any details about the plan —— of the meeting.
(a) in front (b) ahead (c) prior (d) advance
▶ポイント TOEIC 御用達の熟語の問題です。もちろん会話でも使えます。
● ahead of ～よりも前に Japan is 17 hours ahead of Canada. （日本は、カナダより17 時間進んでいる）
● prior to ～ よりも前に Please come to 10 minutes prior to the meeting.（会議の始まる10 分前に来てください）
日本語にするとどちらも「～よりも前」となるので(c) を選ぶ方の多い問題です。問題文の”of”に注目してください。
正解：(b)
訳：会議は、２時30 分に始まる予定ですが、マネジャーは会議の前には予定に関して何も詳細を話していない。
2. People who enjoy a ——bottle of French wine will have to pay at least $150 at high-end restaurants under the new system.
(a) fine (b) final (c) finally (d) finalized
▶ ポイント fine に「素晴らしい=excellent・平均よりずいぶん良い=better than average」という意味があることを知っておくべきです。知らないと、final を選ぶ人が多い問題です。fine wine は、高級ワインのことです。また、高級レストランは、fine dining restaurant もしくは、high-end restaurant といいます。また、名詞で使うと、罰金という意味にもなります。いろいろな意味を持つ単語です。
正解：(a)
訳：高級ワインをたしなむ人々は、新しい規則のもとでは少なくとも150 ドルを高級レストランで払わなければならない。
3. When the employee was fired from the Ministry of Health, his controversial project ——suddenly without notice.
(a) halt (b) was halted (c) have halted (d) was halting
▶ポイント halt= stop です。イギリスでは、他動詞stop の代わりにhalt をよく使います。
他動詞halt は、① We stopped the project.（目的語を伴う）か ② The project was stopped. （受動態）かどちらかの形で使います。この問題は、②のパターンです。
正解：(b)
訳：従業員が、厚生労働省を解雇された時に、彼の物議をかもしているプロジェクトは、予告なしに突然中止された。
4. The company went ——late in April last year due to poor sales,the declining economy and lack of interest from customers.
(a) under (b) over (c) behind (d) back
▶ポイント go と副詞の組み合わせの熟語です。
● go under 商売が失敗する= go bankrupt
The store went under last year.（その店は、昨年倒産した）
● go over 説明する・目を通す=examine, look at something
I go over my notes before I go into an exam.（テストの前にはノートに目を通す）
正解：(a)
その会社は、売り上げの低下、景気後退・お客離れが原因で昨年の４月下旬に倒産した。
